mass book awards

Not sure how this happened but my second book, Sunday Pancakes, was recognized by my home state! The Bear in My Family and Dandelion Magic have been included on the Must Reads in previous years, but wow, an Honor! What an honor!

It’s been a joy to hear people tell me how the book reminds them of their own pancake/waffle memories. Or that they’ve now started one with their kids. Or that they tried the pancake recipe together.

I remember when I was working on this book from 2020-2021, there was a lot going on in the world. It felt so frivolous to be creating a book about animal friends making pancakes when so many fellow kid lit creators were fighting for representation and diversity. I questioned & worried if I should still move forward with Sunday Pancakes, and if I was letting down my community. I managed to keep going with the help of friends reminding me why I create. These kinds of thoughts haven’t gone away, but I’ll continue working on my stories that (I hope) are comforting and recognize those small happy moments in every day life… all done with a touch of humor.
